no room guest room

March 27, 2011

In my experience with WWOOFing (Willing Workers On Organic Farms)  around Ireland, I found no farm was the same when it came to sleeping arrangements. I found many versions of what farmers referred to as a guest house. Sometimes we had our own apartment, a room in the house, and one time (due to lack of room) they ushered us into a camper van. Although this particular camping van wasn’t in the best condition, it couldn’t stop me from thinking o having my own one day to put up guests. If you’re house is small without a room to accommodate a guest, there’s no sense cramming them on the sofa. Give them their own private space and keep yours.

Spring Quiche

March 25, 2011

So, the weather here is definitely taking a turn for the better; the sun is out and birds have returned.  But, there is still a crispness to the air.  So, this quiche is perfect- spring vegetables plus the  hearty wholesomeness of egg, cheese, and pie crust.  This would be a great dish to bring to an Easter brunch.

Relief for Japan

March 18, 2011

Today, many bloggers are participating in a day of blog- silence in remembrance of the lives lost in Japan, encouraging others to donate in lieu of a regular post.

Whale and Mouse is happy to be a part of this relief campaign.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

March 17, 2011

When Katy and I were in Ireland everyone reminded us that we were not Irish until we dirtied our hands stacking freshly cut peat from the bogs.

Maybe this was just their ploy to have us stack all their turf, but it didn’t stop us from feeling more Irish.

So happy St. Patrck’s day!!

Irish Beer

March 16, 2011

Last year, Ian and I spent 6- months traveling through Ireland.  We stayed on coastal farms and worked our way around the island.  We connected with distant cousins, ate heaps of brown bread and butter, learned to love tea and instant coffee, trimmed trees, stacked peat and picked weeds.  Oh, and we drank at the local pubs after a hard day’s work!  We each had our respective regular orders.

Ian fell in love with Beamish, a stout local to the Cork area

I started with Guinness but quickly moved onto Bulmer’s Cider for the duration of our trip

So raise a glass of your favorite brew in honor of St. Patrick’s Day tomorrow! Cheers!

For the first time they are bringing back previous clothing collections and putting them up for sale at great prices.  It’s called GO International Designer Collective and you can shop at your local target or online.
